Rural chapel of St Stefano in Perno

The original chapel was built in the 12th century. We can still see its stone semicircular apse and small parts of the side walls. It was restructured between 1977/1083. The nave and the façade were rebuilt between 1753 and 1757. A thorough archaeological work (1980/1982) has localised a burial ground at 394 m. a.s.l. that dates back to the pre-Romanic period, (tombs of the 10th 12th century). Inside the chapel, in the apse bowl, on the right side, we can see a painting of St. Matteo with an angel at his feet, of the second half of the 14th century (or the beginning of the 15th century); on the left side, we can see a fragment of a painting of St. Stefano’s lapidation, dating back to the second half lf the 15th century.
