Monforte can boast very ancient origins (traces of Neolithic and Roman time settlements have been found in this area). Monforte owes its name to the castle surrounded by walls (“fortis”) that was built during the Middle Ages on the top of the hill (“mons”). According to two historians – Glabro and Landolfo Seniore - it was taken by force by the army of Ariberto d'Intimiano, Archbishop of Milan, in 1028, in order to crush the heresy of the “Catari” that had spread in this area and had involved the feudal lords. The people of Mons Fortis were taken to Milan and forced to choose between abjuration and the stake. Most of them chose to be burnt at the stake. We can suppose that the name Monforte is present in Milan’s toponymy because of these events. During the 13th century, Monforte became first a Fee of the Marquises Del Carretto, and later a Fee of the Marquises Scarampi del Cairo. In 1703 it was conquered by the troops of the House of Savoy and became part of the Reign of Sardegna.
